Segesta

Segesta is an unfinished Doric temple started around 424 BC and located about 1/2 hour from our home base. It was not finished because a new war had started with Selinus in 416 BC.

On the next hill over is a theatre in the process of being restored. You can walk up the hill which takes about 30 minutes ot take the bus for 1.5 euro.

What is amazing is that archelogists can tell so much of the history from a pile of rubble: foundations of a mosque and Arab style housing, the stones of which were dismantled and used to build a 13th centruy Norman castle; a late medieval church; a house abondoned after a fire in the first century BC.
