Erice

Above the city of Trapani is a mountain that has a fortified town of Erice, with a castle. Erice is usually covered with clouds and often fogged in. I did not have much luck getting a good shot of it with my crappy camera.

Chris took a shot of it at night with the lights along the roadway.

From the top, looking to the north you can see the mountain, behind which is the tourist village of San Vito lo Capo.

It is a long, windy road to the top.

From the parking lot, we found the cathedral and bell tower.

The bell tower stands separately from the cathedral (the Chiesa Matrice). The Torre di Federico was built around 1315, as an Aragon watchtower and houses a viewing terrace and the tourist information office.

Doesn't it seem like a perfect location for a film about the Middle Ages?

While the signage says clearly not to take your car through town, I drove down these streets twice. The cars were manual shift.  I was confident going up hill but when I got into a very tight corner on a 45 degree decline, I clutched (pun intended) at the idea of reversing. Greg got out and directed me so I could go forward since I could not possibly have backed out.   Yotam says that is one of the things he will remember of his trip to Sicily!
